Ramtha - SoulMates
Written by Mike Servis
This...thing...was made all of light, like golden glitter dropped through a ray of sunlight. His shoulders came to the top of the door, and it was as if the ceiling had disappeared to make room for his head. It was beautiful. His robe seemed to be of purple light, a dazzling display of color and crystal against this strangeness of immense human form[1]
The preceding quote was taken from A State of Mind, the autobiography of a woman known today as J. Z. Knight. She is the "channel" for an entity that calls himself Ramtha, the Enlightened One. She was married to Jeremy Wilder, a well established Tacoma dentist; then one night in February of 1977 strange things began to happen. Back then she had two boys, P.T.A. meetings, doctors appointments, and dinner parties with other dentists and their wives--hardly someone you'd think of as a New-Age Guru. Even today the only thing "a little" different about her is the fact that she's terribly rich and has been leasing her body out to a 35,000-year-old warrior for the past seventeen years. On more than one occasion she's been cornered by a reporter after one of Ramtha's "intensives." Obviously impressed by Ramtha's intelligence, they ask her if she's had an I. Q. test lately. She flatly denies being intelligent, and admits to dropping out of her first and only year of business college. I looked up the word "channel" in my '95 Websters and couldn't find anything, so you're going to get my perspective. I'll start with the book of Genesis: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every thing that creepeth upon the earth." I believe that God is unlimited thought. If you took a giant vacuum and vacuumed up every star in the heavens, what you have left is unlimited thought. If mankind is made in the image and likeness of God, then he also must be unlimited thought. When I say that J. Z. Knight is a channel for Ramtha, I mean that her "essence" temporarily leaves her body and is replaced with this entity called Ramtha. Rather than describing him now, I'll let him tell his own story:
I am a Sovereign entity who lived a long time ago on Earth. In that life I did not die; I ascended, for I learned to harness the power of my mind and to take my body with me into an unseen dimension of life. In doing so, I realized an existence of unlimited freedom, unlimited joy, unlimited life. I am now part of an unseen brotherhood who loves mankind greatly. We are your brothers who hear your prayers and your meditations and observe your movements to and fro.[2]
During his life on earth, he claims to have conquered 2/3rds of the known world, leading an army of thousands and hacking men to bits with his broadsword. He rose from a childhood of dire poverty and went on to become the Hindu legend of "The Ram." In his own words: "I was an imbecile, a barbarian, the biggest bastard of them all, and yet I became enlightened. I sought out the unknown God with a vengeance and discovered the unknown God was myself. I have returned to teach you what I learned.[3]
For the first couple of years his teachings were called Dialogues because he spent some time each session answering the questions of a the few brave souls in his audiences. It didn't matter if a young mother was asking about her unborn child or if a prominent scientist had a problem in physics he couldn't solve--Ramtha had an answer that impressed them.
I read about a workshop with Ramtha in January of '86 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Seattle. There were approximately 250 people in attendance. The theme for that weekend's intensive was Soulmates. Most of the people listening that weekend, didn't hear exactly what they expected to hear, even though he started out by saying what everyone wanted to hear:
Do you possess that "enigma"? that "lover" who comes in and out of your dreams? that perpetual vision of knighthood or womanhood? that pure brilliant light? Do you possess this? Indeed! All of you do.[4]
What Ramtha taught that weekend in Seattle, J. Z. experienced firsthand some years later. You are your own soulmate. If you can't make yourself happy, no "soulmate" is going to do the job for you. In the spring of 1980, Judith Wilder met who she thought was her soulmate, Jeffrey Knight. By 1984 he became husband number five. Five years later he confessed to being gay and contracting the H.I.V. virus sometime before they met. There was a bitter court battle in Tacoma's Pierce County Superior Court. "The two took Ramtha to paying audiences throughout the U.S. At one time, in the mid-'80s, Knight estimates J.Z. was earning $4 million a year from her various Ramtha enterprises." Both J. Z. and Jeffrey had new men in their lives when they decided to call it quits. She offered him a $120 thousand dollar settlement, but that wasn't enough. It was a rather unusual court battle with lots of press, but he never got more than the $120 thousand dollars that J.Z. offered to help pay for medical expenses. After J.Z. learned of Jeffrey's infection she was tested negative for H.I.V. So much for soulmates!
Today all of Ramtha's intensives are conducted at J.Z.'s ranch in Yelm,in a huge 1000 person capacity building that Ramtha calls the "great hall." Each person is allotted his space on the astro-turf floor. Intensive is a very accurate term for his presentation; he is indeed intense. He is constantly interacting with his audience and he demands 110% attention from all that attend. I've heard him say that it is uncomfortable to occupy J. Z.'s body for more than three hours at a time, so he usually conducts his sessions with breaks every two hours. I don't know if that two hours is harder on him, or his audience.
He contends that the only difference between him and us is that he"knows" he is God, and nearly all of us have forgotten. Ramtha is without a doubt one of the more unusual characters of our time. He's created controversy with thousands, made enemies of thousands more. Personally I don't see J.Z.'s adventures as having anything to do with him. I don't know why he's my hero. Maybe it's the barbarian in me.
